Anyone even half-watching the Oscars Sunday night saw some way-weird TV. Who was that woman who grabbed the mike from Roger Ross Williams, director/producer of best documentary short winner Music by Prudence in the midst of his thank-yous? Elinor Burkett, a former producer of the film, that’s who.
We have no idea whether she was stoned, hammered, blitzed, or evolutionarily challenged, but she no hello was what saying any idea no words sense! They’re calling it the “Oscar Kanye Moment,” referring to rappoid Kanye West’s notorious upstaging of winsome, deserving Taylor Swift at the Video Music Awards last September.
So Betty began swinging her walking stick with vicious ferocity at Elinor, who bravely wrestled down the octogenarian’s weapon of mass detestation, swooped in stage right – “A man never lets the woman talk! Isn’t that just the classic thing?” – got jawing, and Roger was heard no more.
Fact: Ross is a graduate (1981) of Easton High School. Fact: Betty, who lives in Warrington, flew by jet to L.A. for the awards show. It was her first time on a plane. she claims that when Oscar was announced, Roger’s mom, Betty Williams, used a cane to restrain her from charging the stage.
Dueling explanation shows! Roger appeared last night on CNN’s Larry King Live to give the rest of his acceptance speech. And at 9 tonight on HLN’s Joy Behar Show, Elinor will appear – presumably having relearned the English language. With “Kanyes” becoming more common, we see King becoming the go-to guy when celebs want to finish a thought.
