Stephanie Birkitt Letterman’s in the News Assistant

Stephanie Anne Birkitt born January 7, 1975 is an assistant to David Letterman on Late Show with David Letterman. Although Birkitt was usually treated as a character named Vicki, in some of her appearances, Letterman referred to her by various other surreal nicknames such as Smitty, Kitty, Monty, Gunter, and Dutch. It has been alleged that she and Letterman were lovers.

Stephanie Birkitt has been identified as a former lover and one of the women involved in the David Letterman extortion plot. A source tells People there is another former staffer who was a lover as well.

Birkitt, Letterman’s former assistant who has made several appearances on the “Late Show,” lived with alleged blackmailer Robert “Joe” Halderman, who allegedly “was in possession of Birkitt’s diary, correspondence and photos — which he says incriminated Letterman,”

Last fall Stephanie Birkitt, David Letterman, and Joe Halderman were in the news. If you recall, David Letterman was threatened with black mail by former CBS News producer Joe Halderman. Rather than run away from or knuckle under to Joe Halderman’s black mail threat,

David Letterman called the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and then, in a funny, mater-of-fact, yet dramatic fashion that’s now one of the classic moments of television, David Letterman gave this on-air confession starting with “I have a story to tell you.”

Birkitt is a 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University who interned in the writers’ department at the “Late Show” in spring 1996. After a stint at “48 Hours” — incidentally, where Halderman worked as a producer — Birkitt moved back to the “Late Show.” After a job as producer, Birkitt applied to be Letterman’s assistant.

“I heard there was a job in Dave’s office opening up and I applied, because I didn’t think I was much of a news hound, as it was a little too serious for my personality,” she told the New Hampshire Union Leader in 2004.
