Westminster Dog Show on TV tonight. As the Winter Olympics. What do you see?

On the one hand, NBC in prime time is shown in pair’s figure skating and snowboarding. On the other hand, will be Westminster dog toys, non-sporting and herding groups that begin on the cable USA Network (owned by NBC Universal), and mix over to CNBC later in the evening.

The human competition is likely to win this match smack down. After all, it was glamorous athletes cavorting in snow and ice. Westminster? A gang of men in tweed walking their dogs indoors.

That’s the conventional wisdom, anyway. But for the substantial minority of U.S. households are saluki’s bigger drag than skaters.

Here are some of the reasons:

Dogs are sweeter than Lindsey Vonn. The flowing hair! These shiny teeth! There’s nothing like an Irish set bouncing around the ring.

American skier Lindsey Vonn is very attractive. But go a long haired dachshund down the street, and people will spontaneously COO, “Awww, she’s so cute! Look at the hair in your ears! Who is a good dog?” Yes you are, you are such a good dog! ”

They tend not to do well in show business, because judges prefer races that hair can be styled. But Uno the Beagle won the Westminster in 2008, and he is still the most popular champion in series history.

This year, my favorite is Sadie, a four-year-old Scottish terrier. Tune in Tuesday after the dramatic best-in-show is over and see if she wins.
