The Bombay Stock Exchange Limited is the oldest stock exchange in Asia and has the largest number of listed companies in the world, with 4,700 listed as of August 2007. It is located at Dalal Street, Mumbai, India. 31. December 2007 stock market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE was U.S. $ 1.79 trillion and the largest stock exchange in South Asia and the 12 largest in the world.
With over 4,700 Indian companies listed on the stock exchange, it has a substantial turnover. BSE Sensex (sensitive index), also called the “BSE 30″, is a widely used market index in India and Asia. Though many other exchanges exist, BSE and National Stock Exchange of India account for the bulk of share trading in India.

BSE provides an efficient and transparent market for trading equities, debt instruments and derivatives. It has a nationwide reach with a presence in more than 359 cities in India. BSE has always been in line with international standards. The systems and processes are designed to ensure market integrity and enhance transparency in operations. BSE is the first stock exchange in India, and the other in the world to achieve ISO 9001:2000 certification.
BSE continues to innovate. Recently it has become the first national-level stock market to launch its website in Gujarati and Hindi to reach a larger number of investors. It has implemented a reporting platform for corporate bonds in India christened ICDM or Indian Corporate Debt Market, and a unique ticker-cum-screen hits the name “BSE Broadcast”, which provides information to the common man in the street.
In 2006 launched the BSE Directors Database and Icer (Indian Corporate Electronic Reporting System) to facilitate the flow of information and increased transparency in the Indian capital market. While Directors Database provides an easy access to information on the boards of listed companies, simplify Icer companies will share with BSE corporate network enouncements.

Department of Investor Services to remedy complaints from investors. BSE was the first stock exchange in the country to provide an amount of Rs.1 million for investor protection fund; it is an amount greater than any exchange in the country.
