Low magnitude earthquake shake West Bengal



Low magnitude earthquake felt in parts of West Bengal, including the state capital Kolkata, on Monday afternoon, said meteorologist.

“We have received reports of mild tremors in different parts of the state. Seismological cell, we examined the case now,” said the official of the Regional Meteorological Center Kolkata.

Initial reports of an earthquake felt in South Bengal districts, Malde, and some parts of Darjeeling.

A high magnitude earthquake in central Bhutan is Monday shook India’s northeast state of Assam and Tibet, according to officials and news reports. Temblor measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, occurred 10 km depth and settled in India 2:23 (0853 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey.
Preliminary reports said cracks developed in concrete structures for housing and capital Guwahati and Assam, but no fatalities or major damage reported immediately.

According to the U.S. Agency, Quake’s Epicenter was located in Mongar, 180 kilometers east of the Bhutanese capital Thimphu, and 135 km north of Guwahati near the Bhutan border, China’s Himalayan region of Tibet.

It was felt strongly in Lhasa, capital of Tibet, Chinese state media said. There was no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Lhasa and elsewhere in Tibet.

India’s NDTV news channel reported that the tremors were felt in India’s north-eastern States and both India and Bhutan at the border. Mild tremor was also of the opinion that the eastern metropolis of Kolkata.

Seven northeast Indian state Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Lappi, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur is located in earthquake-prone area and has reported four moderate earthquakes since August.

Assam experienced one of India’s worst earthquake, 8.7 on the Richter scale, in 1897, killing 1600 people.
