Little Dorrit is a serial author by Charles Dickens. This serial published originally between 1855 and 1857th It is a work of satire on the shortcomings of society and government in the period.
Much of Dickens ‘anger is directed at institutional debtors’ prisons, where people who owed money were imprisoned, unable to work until they repaid their debt. The representative prison in this case, the Marshalsea where the author’s own father had been imprisoned.
Most of Dickens’ other reviews of this novel is the social safety net: industry, and the care and safety of workers, the bureaucracy of the British Treasury Department (which figured in the fictional “circumlocution Office” [Bk. 1, Ch. 10]), and separation of people based on lack of time between classes.
Little Dorrit was published in 19 monthly installments, each consisting of 32 pages, and offers two illustrations by Phiz. Each installment cost you a penny, except the last, a double issue, which cost two shillings.
